Description
This triptych (three-frame image) featuring a lovely small white bloom with its lush deep purple center showcases a weed...yes, a weed! But what a weed!!! "Flower-of-An-Hour" is a wild variant of the hibiscus family that can show up here in the Mid-Atlantic states just about anywhere there's soil. More often than not, when you see one of these plants you won't see blooms. You'll likely see plenty of buds, maybe some partially open and a pretty shade of pink, but it's not often that you'll see a partially or fully opened blossom like this one. Blooms typically last a very short time, generally in the range of an hour, thus the name. So, exercising a certain amount of stubborn determination, I set out to capture this "elusive" bloom at different stages...thus this triptych that shows a bloom in the just-starting bud stage, partially open, and then fully open. It took several days to capture these images, but this composite nicely shows the stages that these pretty blooms very rapidly go through in their short lifetime.

The bud is pretty by itself. I love that you shared the life cycle of the flower with us. It somewhat resembles Coulter's Hibiscus, which we see here (but rarely; they're inconspicuous and few and far between). I saw one yesterday.
Daniel Beard replied:
Thanks Pat for both favorite and comment! They really are pretty at every stage. When I discovered the name (Thank you “Picture This”) trying to capture the progression seemed natural. With weather playing a role, getting three decent shots was challenging, but worth the time and effort. ;)

Daniel Beard replied:
Thanks Debby! It took three (very impatient) days to get all three exposures, but I'm really pleased with the outcome. ;)
