Description
This triptych (3-panel photograph) captured here in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley is a composite of three sequential photographs of a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird sitting in the rain and beginning a joyous dance not unlike the "Snoopy Dance" we've witnessed in animated "Charlie Brown" cartoons. The first frame captures the little lady just after she lands on the hammock and looks up at the falling rain. The second frame captures her reaction as she welcomes the rain and allows it to soak and cleanse her feathers. In the third frame it seems as though she's spreading her wings and looking skyward in an enthusiastic "thank you" for the gift of such a refreshing rain in the face of blistering heat. These three frames only begin to capture the joyous ten-minute dance in the rainfall we were blessed to witness, but hopefully they serve to convey the essence of that joyous sight. On the technical side, these images are rather extraordinary because they were captured from indoors, through a closed window and screen, and between the slats of window blinds, with a hand-held Canon 70D camera with 150-500mm Sigma USM lens at full extension. I thank my wife who saw the bird land and begin her dance and am so very glad my wife was paying more attention to goings-on outdoors than I was. ;)

Wonderful triptych, Daniel. I love the story it tells of this pretty little hummer! Here in the high country of northern California we only have hummingbirds in summer and on hot afternoons they often flit around playing in my sprinklers...someday maybe one will do it when I have a camera handy 😁
Daniel Beard replied:
Thanks Mike! It was an absolute joy to witness in person and a minor miracle that a) camera was nearby, b) I managed to get decently clear shots through window and screen. Sometimes we just get lucky!!! ;)
